Wildlife and Birdwatching

As famous for it's wildlife as it is golf, the unspoilt beauty of the Scottish countryside and wildlife reserves, makes it an ideal place to find an abundance of birds, fish, plants and various other animals uncommon to other areas.

At Greenbank, we are fortunate enough to overlook the internationally acclaimed Montrose Basin a huge tidal basin, which provides a home for many species of fish and migratory birds particularly during the winter months. Shelduck, Widgeon, Redshank, Knot, Eider and also the beautiful Pink footed geese nest and take refuge here during migration, as do many other species throughout the year. It truly is spectacular sight watching and listening to the 100's of geese that come in to land each evening. Some of the events at Montrose Basin Wildlife Centre, (link to www.swt.org.uk/wildlife/montrosebasin.asp ) one mile South West of our home, include exhibitions, guided walks, talks, children's activities and family days.

Other reserves close by include St Cyrus Nature Reserve, six miles North East of Montrose. Here you will find fulmars nesting on the cliffs, skylarks and stonechats, plus a huge variety of butterflies and moths. (link to www.nnr-scotland.org.uk/reserve.asp?NNRId=29 )

Approximately ten miles South West you will find Seaton Cliffs Nature Reserve on the outskirts of Arbroath. (link to www.swt.org.uk/wildlife/popup_reserves/east/seaton.htm Here you will find a variety of marine life, insects, butterflies, rock doves, house-martins, artic terns and gannets to name but a few of the regularly sighted wildlife.

In addition, many guided sites can be found by contacting the Scottish Wildlife Trust (link to www.swt.org.uk/ or the Scottish National Heritage (link to www.snh.org.uk/ )
